Note: This workshop will be held primarily in Dutch. As part of Wish Me Well, De Feministische Handwerk Partij (The Feminist Craft Party) is organising a workshop. In this session, we will explore handicrafts not only as a craft practice, but also as a means of coming together, sharing care, and discussing social issues. Taking Lara Schnitger’s artwork as a point of departure — created from hand-decorated sandbags that safeguard feminist values — we will examine how textiles, mending, and care have been intertwined with the role of women in society for centuries.
During this workshop, De Feministische Handwerk Partij (FHP) introduces participants to the simple technique of darning and the hidden history of handicraft through two archetypes: the wool-spinning witch and the Creabea. As you learn how to repair clothing either invisibly or visibly through visible mending, a story unfolds about textiles as a tool of both oppression and resistance. From the ways in which church and state have used handicraft to confine women to the domestic sphere and silence their voices, to a much older and largely erased history in which spinning was regarded as a magical and essential survival skill within tribal European cultures.
Like Wish Me Well, this workshop asks which values we want to protect, restore and pass on today. Repair becomes a feminist gesture: an act of attention, care and resistance against throwaway culture, exhaustion and historical amnesia.
FHP is a political feminist artists’ movement engaged in studying, repairing, speaking, mending, unlearning and altering. Through performative actions and workshops, the movement investigates the overlooked history of textile production within the everyday lives of women and advocates for greater recognition of care, maintenance and repair.
De Feministische Handwerk Partij is an initiative by artist Emmeline de Mooij and director Margreet Sweerts.
Participants are asked to bring an item they would like to repair, as well as their own sewing materials. For those who do not have any materials, FHP will provide sewing supplies.
