As part of Wish Me Well, De Feministische Handwerk Partij is hosting a workshop that explores handicraft not only as a craft, but also as a way of bringing people together, sharing care and discussing social issues. Surrounding Lara Schnitger's artwork, made from hand-decorated sandbags that symbolically protect feminist values, participants will explore how textiles, mending and care have been connected to the role of women in society for centuries.
De Feministische Handwerk Partij (FHP) introduces participants to the simple technique of darning while uncovering the hidden history of handicrafts through two archetypes: the wool-spinning witch and the Creabea. As you learn how to repair clothing either invisibly or visibly through visible mending, a story unfolds about textiles as both a tool of oppression and a means of resistance. It traces how the church and the state used handicrafts to confine women to the domestic sphere and silence them, while also revealing a much older, largely erased history in which spinning was regarded as a magical and essential survival skill within tribal European cultures.
Like Wish Me Well, this workshop asks what values we want to protect, restore and pass on today. Repair becomes a feminist act: an expression of care, attention and resistance against throwaway culture, exhaustion and historical erasure.
De Feministische Handwerk Partij is a political feminist artists' movement dedicated to studying, repairing, speaking, mending, unlearning and restoring. Through performative actions and workshops, the movement explores the overlooked history of textile production within the everyday lives of women and advocates for greater appreciation of care, maintenance and repair.
De Feministische Handwerk Partij is an initiative by artist Emmeline de Mooij and director Margreet Sweerts.
At the end of the afternoon, there will be a closing vernissage at Wish Me Well, where participants will join Lara Schnitger in tossing a coin into the artwork one final time.
Participants are asked to bring an item they would like to repair, along with their own sewing materials. For those who do not have any, De Feministische Handwerk Partij will provide sewing supplies.
