IN TUNE by Henk Schut - Stichting NDSM-werf
In the 25 years that Henk Schut has had his studio at the NDSM-werf, he has grown with the transformation from a rugged artists' breeding ground to an area with housing, commercial projects, and a dynamic mix of talents, where there was room for experimentation, art, collaboration, and collective growth. In 2025, he will share in a podcast how these changes left lasting traces and how his multidisciplinary practice — in which he conducts research and collaborates with specialists — makes the studio a space for experimentation, architecture, and sound.
Sense, register and how to discover messages: A method by | Twentyfivenineteen – Beautiful Distress
During this podwalk, visitors were introduced to Twentyfivenineteen's observation method, where the public space of the NDSM-werf served as a research field for sensory exercises that produced registrations in image and language, intended to activate the senses and discover messages. Twentyfivenineteen was a collaboration between Michelle de Vaan and Ilke van Deventer, who, through shared working methods and observations, built a project that would only be completed in 2519, allowing formed messages to independently evolve towards an unknown outcome.
Bodem est Omen by Hannelore Havelaar - Over Het IJ
In Bodem est Omen you found yourself in the middle of an episode of Radio Dokwerk, a rebellious station where Hannelore Havelaar investigated stories about corrupt project developers, polluted land, and secret spaces beneath the NDSM-werf, while the audience could freely walk around the area and experience music, poetry, debate, and insider stories. Havelaar, an audiovisual theater maker who wove video, film, radio, and documentaries with humor and narrative, welcomed an inquisitive audience who sought answers themselves and were rewarded: those who dug deep found answers.
Art Whispers by Esther Kin - Treehouse NDSM
The NDSM-werf invites you to wander and be inspired by art and creativity, such as during Esther Kin's guided tour where visitors could transform their own observations into a personal creative impulse. In her work, Kin explores the interplay between emotion and movement and guides others in developing their own visual language to meaningfully express what moves them.
A Glimpse of the NDSM Soul and Zeitgeist by Rienke Enghardt - NDSM Fuse
For this NDSM Art Walk, Rienke Enghardt tells the story of the Scheepsbouwloods (Shipbuilding Shed) and other key figures of the shipyard, where past, present, and future converge in a walk based on Cadavre Exquis, a collective drawing game that produces surprising artworks. Since her arrival at the NDSM-werf 25 years ago, Rienke has developed her practice and the mobile art project Hope Box here, and actively contributed to the Scheepsbouwloods and the construction of the Hope Box Home.
Vloetogen by Lila Bullen-Smith, Megan Hadfield and Toni Brell - Stichting NDSM-werf
This podwalk allowed you to explore the NDSM through an immersive, sensory audio walk where sound, text, scent, taste, and performance converged, intertwining fiction and reality with the historical and socio-political layers of the location. The podwalk was created by Lila Bullen-Smith, Megan Hadfield, and Toni Brell, who each explore in their practice how location, text, sound, and tactile experiences enable new ways of perceiving and understanding.
Floating structures by Carlyn Westerink - Art City NDSM
Upon entering the NDSM Loods, visitors immediately feel the fusion of the raw shipyard and the experimental art community, inviting them to explore new perspectives and curiously embrace the unknown. Visual artist Carlyn Westerink worked with watercolor and colored pencil to create layered, dreamlike scenes that encourage reflection and deceleration amidst this vibrant, historic space.
