IN TUNE is about finding a new balance between human beings and their environment by appealing to our capacity for hearing and listening. Just as tuning a musical instrument requires extremely attentive listening and observation, we must continue to listen and, as humans, tune ourselves to our surroundings. In Tune is active from 12:00 to 17:00, with an interval of 5 minutes.

The sound installation IN TUNE consists of a large bronze tuning fork, 3 meters high, and four horns that project sound from the Y-slope toward the four cardinal directions. In Tune is active from 12:00 to 17:00; at 5-minute intervals, the tuning fork tunes the environment. As it comes into contact with the water and the concrete of the Y-slope, different sounds are continuously produced. The sound and vibration of the fork spread in waves across the water, bouncing off the concrete walls and metal structures on the slope. In this way, the entire site becomes an acoustic musical instrument.

Curator Petra Heck: “The Y-slope is a special location because it is the place where ships used to slide into the water. The view of the IJ and the city of Amsterdam from this spot is unique. For Stichting NDSM-werf, it is not only important that Henk Schut is an NDSM-artist from the very beginning, but also that his work responds to the site, its history, and the present. In addition to old myths, NDSM also needs new images and sounds to give form to the site’s distinctive sense of place.”

About Henk Schut
Henk Schut has been working at the former shipyard for more than 20 years. Schut, known among other things for large-scale installations such as THE VAN GOGH MILE, in which he stretched a red rope from the Van Gogh Museum to the Hermitage in Amsterdam, has now realized a work especially for NDSM.Henk Schut is an artist who analyzes environments, communities, historical events, and current affairs with an open and curious eye. He creates spaces within a space, place, or context, often with architecture and sound playing an important role. For some time now, Schut’s work has focused on the relationship between sound and space. Through his installations, the artist continually searches for ways in which a place can be reconsidered or viewed anew through sound.

About Stichting NDSM-werf
Stichting NDSM-werf programmes and manages the monumental outdoor space of NDSM as a cultural wharf, with public character, creative experimentation and plurality of voices at its core. The foundation develops and presents site-specific installations and artworks by and in collaboration with artists, designers and architects.

In Tune is made possible in part by the Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst and the Mondriaan Fonds.
