This summer, Stichting NDSM-werf presents New Dawn by Howareyoufeeling.studio: a public installation of 108 red monobloc chairs inviting visitors to take a seat, pause, and become part of a shared ritual of attention, stillness and encounter.

New Dawn was developed by the Mumbai-based artist couple Doyel Joshi and Neil Ghose Balser of Howareyoufeeling.studio. Within the Indian context, the circle of 108 red monobloc chairs symbolises wholeness and connectedness, while also serving as an announcement of a new day.

With New Dawn, the artists invite visitors to take a seat, pause and observe. By simply sitting and looking, the audience becomes part of a shared ritual of attention, stillness and slowing down. In this way, Howareyoufeeling.studio creates space for collective reflection and encounter.

Between 10 July and 23 August, the circle of chairs will move daily across the NDSM site, forming a dynamic spatial choreography. Monobloc chairs are used around the world and, in this red version, are characteristic of public spaces in India. Precisely because of their everyday and universal nature, they invite everyone to take a seat. The chairs belong to everyone and can find a place anywhere.

Inspired by the album and song of the same name by composer and musician Anoushka Shankar, the installation explores cyclical processes in nature and human existence: the rising and setting of the sun, the ebb and flow of the tides, and the rhythms of waking and dreaming. Doyel Joshi and Neil Ghose Balser approach these cycles as metaphors for transition, recovery and continuity. The installation offers an opportunity to reflect on how individuals and communities respond to change and uncertainty, and how new perspectives – a “new dawn” – may emerge.

In 2025, New Dawn was commissioned by Brighton Festival and Anoushka Shankar, and was presented at various locations across Brighton.
