At the NDSM Kinderatelier, imagination takes centre stage. Children come up with and create their own designs using a wide range of leftover materials from the artists’ studios on the warf. Under the guidance of these artists – who believe that every child is creative and can be encouraged to bring their ideas to life – the children work their way from sketch to finished piece. There is plenty of scope to find solutions using the materials at hand, with the supervisors actively contributing ideas throughout the process. The team at the NDSM Kinderatelier consists of artists who work at the warf. The NDSM itself, the elements of water and wind, and the artworks on display often form the starting point for the workshops.
NDSM Kinderatelier: Self-portrait as a building
What would you look like if you were a building? What rooms would it have? What would the outside look like? Are you a house with 100 little tower rooms, a futuristic villa or a colourful floating houseboat?
Together with the children, we will first sketch out floor plans, which we will then turn into 3D models using cardboard and recycled materials. These can then be worn as masks. At the end of the workshop, the children will come together to form a village.
This workshop is linked to the work The Argonauts by the British artist Ivan Morison, which will be on display at the warf from 25 September. His artworks explore boundaries between architecture, sculpture and physical experience.
The artists guiding you – Mélanie Corre, Laura Jehle, Valerie van Leersum, Hélène Min and Sophie Tiné – all work at NDSM themselves. They’ll help you get started, brainstorm with you and ensure that your idea really comes to life.
