Calling all creatives to reimagine the NDSM Container Arch

The NDSM Container Arch has become one of the most recognisable symbols of NDSM and connects art, industry and community. In recent years, the arch has transformed several times, reflecting the creative nature of the area and the changing identity of NDSM and DGTL. Before 2026, we are again looking for creative talent who, together with DGTL, will provide this iconic landmark with a powerful new design.

The NDSM Container Arch has become one of the most recognisable symbols of the NDSM shipyard: a powerful structure that connects art, industry and community. In recent years, the arch has undergone several transformations, each reflecting the creative nature of the area and the changing identity of both NDSM and DGTL.

For 2026, we are again looking for creative talent who can provide the NDSM Container Arch with a remarkable new design. Together with the NDSM Foundation, we invite artists to re-imagine this iconic landmark. We are looking for makers who dare to think big, can switch quickly and know how to turn ideas into impact.

Who can sign up?
We are looking for muralists, graffiti and street artists who can create a powerful design that reflects the dynamic nature of the NDSM shipyard and DGTL. You can register as an individual, duo, collective or studio. A formal creative education is not required; a strong personal vision and familiar style are essential. This open call offers artists the opportunity to make a statement in the public space of Amsterdam-Noord. The work is expected to remain on display for approximately one year, subject to any additional graffiti.

Criteria
— Based in the Netherlands
— Experience with murals, graffiti, street art or graphic design
— Experience with large-scale work in outdoor areas is an advantage

Design guidelines

  • Avoid light or pastel colors in your design.
  • Use strong contrasts and vibrant colors to make the design stand out against the NDSM's industrial background.

Timeline

  • Sunday, January 4: Deadline for applications
  • Wednesday, January 7: Online selection interview (10:00); the selected artist and project budget will be announced the same day
  • Monday, January 12: Confirmation by the selected artist
  • Friday, March 27: Start of the construction and painting of the Container Arch

How do you sign up?
Send a short introduction (maximum 400 words) explaining why this project is right for you. Include a link to your portfolio, website, or Instagram.
