PIVOT
Héctor Zamora & vão
2025

Art programming by Stichting NDSM-werf

PIVOT makes stimulating connections between industrialization, agriculture and the changing urban environment, and playfully invites reflection on climate adaptation and our relationship with nature. The 100-metre-long installation is a centerpivotirrigationsystem that is widely used in large-scale agriculture in Mexico and South America, among others.
In rural areas, these automated systems are used for monocultures, including soya and corn crops, which are often exported to Europe. Despite their efficiency, they contribute to loss of biodiversity and acceleration of climate change. By moving this icon from industrial agriculture to urban Amsterdam — NDSM, PIVOT take the viewer into the wider systems that shape our environment and cities.
At the NDSM wharf — a former industrial shipbuilding site that now functions as a creative incubator in the middle of a rapidly urbanizing area — PIVOT a symbol of transformation. The installation offers a playful and refreshing moment during hot summer days on the predominantly concrete site. In addition, it is a critical reflection on monoculture formation, both ecologically and socially. This is in sharp contrast to the mission of Stichting NDSM-werf, which focuses on polyphony, experimentation and diversity at NDSM and in public space.
The installation was specially developed for the NDSM-wharf Foundation for the NDSM-wharf. On view from July 11 to August 12, 2025, can be experienced daily in dry weather, between 12:00 and 19:00. The installation is activated every 20 minutes.
About Héctor Zamora
PIVOT (2025) by Zamora & vão is the first monumental work by Héctor Zamora to be presented in the Netherlands. Previously, he realized large-scale projects such as Strangler (Triennale Brugge 2021) and The Roof Garden Commission at the Metropolitan Museum in New York (2020). The soil often forms the basis of Héctor Zamora's (Mexico City, 1974) practice. His large-scale installations establish a relationship with the place, regularly focusing on local building materials and architectural elements. Zamora creates spatial interventions that are not only viewed, but also stimulate a physical experience; they invite you to move, feel and experience a space in a new way.
About vão
vão (São Paulo, 2013) was founded by architects Anna Juni, Enk te Winkel and Gustavo Delonero to conduct spatial research in a wider field. In addition to architecture, they draw on experience and inspiration from the visual arts that led to the development of installations that they showed at the Architecture Biennale in São Paulo and the Biennale of Latin American Architecture, among others.
