He came as a welder - and stayed for the people

Story of Seyfi Çelik and Ayhan Çelik by Stratenmakers Audiocollectief
24 Apr 2025

Seyfi Çelik arrived in the Netherlands in the early 1970s as a welder. At the NDSM shipyard, he worked his way up to foreman, leading a team of 36 welders. By day he managed the crew, and by night he studied Dutch. He rarely took a break, because the machine had to keep running. But amidst the hard work, he built friendships that lasted.

In this story, Seyfi shares his memories of the shipyard, together with his son Ayhan, who used to accompany him to the site as a child.
