The design of the installation

Story of Afaina de Jong by Stratenmakers Audiocollectief
16 Apr 2025

Afaina de Jong is the architect behind the Kinship Library installation. She designed this ‘audio library’ specifically for oral storytelling - a space where listening takes center stage. There are listening spots, for instance, where visitors can hear conversations she had about architecture, as well as stories about the history of NDSM collected by the Stratenmakers Audiocollectief (Fouad Lakbir and Jesper Buursink).

At the heart of the installation are underrepresented voices and narratives. There’s also space in the center for specific music rooted in the diaspora, which to her is an essential part of the oral tradition.

The audio is only available in Dutch.
