New video directed by hiphop artist Gabriel Lester | Binnen

Visual artist Gabriel Lester made the light sculpture Void-Non-Void , which was on display at the NDSM shipyard for several months from February 2018. Before the artwork disappeared, Lester recorded another music video with the hip-hop band Yung Internet. The video for the indoor track can now be viewed online.

In collaboration with the NDSM-werf, Gabriel Lester has directed ‘Binnen’, a music video for the group Yung Internet that takes place in and around the light installation ‘Void-Non-Void’. Gabriel Lester started his career in the hip hop scene as a street artist, a music producer and as an art director making music videos for groups such as Gotcha! and Postmen. For ‘Void-Non-Void’ he has drawn his inspiration from the sights and sounds of the early days of hip hop. The title of the piece is derived from the twelve-inch single ‘The Message’ by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, the godfather of modern hip hop tracks. “Now you’re unemployed, all non-void / Walkin’ round like you’re Pretty Boy Floyd”, describing the toughness of day to day life in American inner-cities. Lester manages to interconnect these rhymes with a legendary anecdote of the same era. During the hight of hip hop in The Bronx, the pulsating breakbeats of DJ’s at local house parties would usually be accompanied by a light show, often produced by a person flicking a light switch to the rhythm of beat.
