The Mask maker and the Tree (2017) | Abner Preis Archived

With The Mask Maker and the Tree, visual artist/storyteller Abner Preis brought to life once again an old folk story.  This narrative has been edited to a story around a village with zombies closing a pact with a magic tree to be happy forever. Preis asked residents from Amsterdam (North) to play the villagers as if they were zombies and want to go into systematic functioning in society and our distance to nature: we are what we eat and how we look at our surroundings.

During a free 3-day workshop at the NDSM-Werf, the story was performed by a very diverse group of people. Together with the artist, choreographer, costume designer, musicians and a film crew, the story was recorded on video and received a theatrical translation during the festival. The Mask Maker and The Tree is a collaborative project between TAAK, Stichting NDSM-werf and Over the IJ Festival.

After the performance in the festival heart of Over the IJ on July 18, 2017, the film performance took place in Sexyland.
