Heat | Collectief Walden
Collectief Walden is an interdisciplinary artists’ collective that derives its name from the famous book ‘Walden’ by Henry David Thoreau. The book is a two-year, two-month and two-day recording of the author, when he spent in seclusion in the forests of Massachusetts to examine the essence of life firsthand. He came to the conclusion that all our primary necessities of life can be traced back to one thing: heat.
Since the industrial revolution, people became increasingly better at creating heat. In fact, we’ve become so good, that now we have a surplus of heat. A heat blanket of CO2 wraps around our globe that suffocates the atmosphere: the greenhouse effect.
Collective Walden creates a cult around the God of heat loss. For Ferrotopia they’ve designed an installation with heating elements. This will serve as a pulpit and stand during a number of evening programs. Collective Walden will hold a ritual to worship the God of heat loss and invites speakers from various backgrounds (a war journalist, a psychologist, an environmental philosopher, a nuclear physicist, a shaman and musicians) to come to ‘preach’ about heat , climate change and the unbridled energy.
The installation premieres during ADE, where several DJs and musicians are asked to perform a warm hymn. The last night of the installation is during Museum Night, when Collectief Walden holds a final ceremony.
Collectief Walden is een interdisciplinair kunstenaarscollectief dat haar naam ontleent aan het beroemde boek ‘Walden’ van Henry David Thoreau. Het boek is een optekening van de twee jaar, twee maanden en twee dagen die de auteur in afzondering in de bossen van Massachusetts doorbracht om de essentie van leven aan den lijve te onderzoeken. Zo kwam hij tot de conclusie dat al onze primaire levensbehoeften terug te voeren zijn tot één ding: warmte.
Sinds de industriële revolutie is de mens steeds beter geworden in het creëren van warmte. Sterker nog, we zijn er zo goed in geworden dat we inmiddels een overschot aan warmte hebben. Een warmtedeken van CO2 wikkelt zich rondom onze aardbol die de atmosfeer verstikt: het broeikaseffect.
Collectief Walden creëert een cultus rondom de God van het warmteverlies. Speciaal voor Ferrotopia ontwerpen ze een installatie opgebouwd met verwarmingselementen. Deze zal gedurende een aantal avondprogramma’s dienst doen als preekgestoelte en tribune. Collectief Walden verzorgt een ritueel ter verering van de God van het warmteverlies en nodigt sprekers met uiteenlopende achtergronden uit (een oorlogsjournalist, een psycholoog, een milieufilosoof, een kernfysicus, een sjamaan en muzikanten) om een ‘warmte-preek’ te komen geven rondom warmte, klimaatverandering en de tomeloosheid van energie.
De installatie gaat in première tijdens ADE, waarbij verschillende DJ’s en musici worden gevraagd een warmte hymne op te voeren. De laatste avond van de installatie is tijdens Museumnacht, wanneer Collectief Walden zelf een eindceremonie houdt.
