(Un)monumenting: The Future Should Always Be Better

Due to special circumstances, the exhibition will be closed on Wednesday February 14th from 13:30 – 16:00.

From December 17 to February 18, Stichting NDSM-werf and Stichting Kinetisch Noord (NDSM warehouse) launch the group exhibition (Un)monumenting: The Future Should Always Be Better.

Twelve artists showcase their work in the first major exhibition, both inside the shipbuilding warehouse and outside on the former NDSM shipyard. (Un)monumenting is a group exhibition featuring new and existing monumental works by twelve (inter)national artists. Through various media, the creators claim space for alternative ‘monuments’ or explore the question of what a monument can be and for whom or what a monument is erected.

In (Un)monumenting, Stichting NDSM-werf and Stichting Kinetisch Noord aim to continue questioning the concept of ‘a monument’ and a monumental place like NDSM. What can a monumental place like this mean for the future? (Un)monumenting arises from a program line of the NDSM Shipyard Foundation concerning the contemporary role of monuments and specifically what this means in a location like NDSM, where monumental heritage, creativity, events, and creators come together.

For NDSM, the discussion about the role and significance of contemporary memorial sites is important. Many neighbors view NDSM as sacred ground: a place that has defined their history and will continue to do so through the history of shipbuilding that took place here. It is primarily the former shipyard itself that is considered a monument. Now, it is a cultural shipyard, a place where art, heritage, and events converge.

You can find more information about the specific works in this exhibition on the location page of (Un)monumenting.
