In The NarcoSexuals, theatermaker and visual artist Dries Verhoeven portrays a group of men who lose themselves in sexual drug use. The audience moves around a single-family home, where through the windows they can contemplate the imagination of a drugged sex party.
On the one hand, the performance questions our relationship to subversiveness, to shameless lust in an increasingly tidy public domain. On the other hand, the performance shows the men in their shaky search for vulnerability and companionship. Are they heralding a new freedom movement? Forty years after gay liberation, are we moving towards a ‘narco-sexual revolt’? Or have we thrown away our sexual ideals, is the so-called revolution lying on the sofa in a coma?
The Narcosexuals was previously shown at Stenen Hoofd and can now be seen during the Nederlands Theater Festival at NDSM (on the headland near MACA). The performance has been nominated for the VSCD Mime/Performance prijs. Tickets are available via the button below.
