The Great Cultural Liberationday Dinner

PROGRAMMING BY STICHTING NDSM-WERF

On May 5, people throughout the Netherlands will gather on squares, bridges and sidewalks for a Freedom Meal on liberation day. In this tradition, NDSM, together with Treehouse NDSM, is shaping The Great Cultural NDSM Liberation Dinner this year, a celebration full of cultural programming and delicious food sold by Tuindorp Deli-cious.

People from Amsterdam, local residents and Northerners are invited to share experiences about (un)freedom together at long tables while eating and flying kites in between. Blowing along with the wind that always seems to blow a little harder on NDSM, while wandering through the airspace; Maurice Scheltens and Bert Jan Pot, founders of the Kite Club, share the free feeling of kite flying on the 5th of May. They bring their own handmade kites and invite other artists to let their ideas fly. You can also bring your own kites and participate in de kite flying yourself. During and after dinner there are musical performances by, among others, local talents from Treehouse, who all sing about freedom in their own way.

NDSM KINDERATELIER

GATE OF CLOUDS BY YASSER BELLEMANS

Artist Yasser Ballemans is making a special installation together with children from Klein Amsterdam who are in their last year of primary school. To honor the emergence and movement of ideas, the children draw or photograph a cloud that they noticed during that year, gave them an idea or simply liked it and display it as a flag on a Gate of Clouds. Together they form a temporary cloudy sky. Like the children were temporarily classmates at Klein Amsterdam. The Gate of Clouds thus becomes a symbolic coming and going of ideas like the children and the ideas at Klein Amsterdam come and go.

Can we make a monument to the dreams we have and what is important when doing so? Which values? What do we want to give? What drives you? Are you bringing your cloud? Will you leave it? Are you gifting it to someone? The Gate of Clouds will be opened on May 5th during the Great Cultural NDSM Liberation Dinner, after which it will be on display at the NDSM wharf for 6 weeks. After that, the Gate of Clouds gets a permanent place in the schoolyard of Klein Amsterdam. A tradition of building clouds is thus born, and every year a new class can make its clouds in front of the gate to commemorate the end of their time at Klein Amsterdam, which replace the clouds of the previous year’s class.
