the Third Potential | Exhibition

Last spring artists Jan Adriaans, Gerwin Luijendijk and Marianna Maruyama worked in the residency Het Vijfde Seizoen on the grounds of the psychiatric institution Altrecht Ggz and Fivoor Forensic care. This is where The Third Potential came about: a project about language in relation to safety and security in a psychiatric environment.

. . . Somewhere in a forested area in the Netherlands. Three men are attentive to a psychiatric institution (their stage?). They greet everyone who enters (the choreography?), They play a role, they ride their bikes on the terrain (with props?), They follow their directors, they discuss strategies for cooperation with the neighborhood (the audience?) And they wear uniforms (costumes?). They all agree that this job is different from their previous jobs.

What does it mean to be a security? Have a function that makes people feel safe? The Third Potential portrays security personnel in an abstract way and discusses their verbal and non-verbal communication. The video installation consisting of nine screens presents us with the paradox of protection and threat. The presence of a security team can make us feel safe and at the same time raises the question: ‘Are we safe here?
