Ferrotopia | Atelier Van Lieshout
27 april-2 december 2018

Ferrotopia by Atelier Van Lieshout is a large-scale art installation in the public space that doubles up as a pop-up museum and offers scope for an extensive programme of activities. The installation celebrates the beauty of steel and explores the transition from the old to the new manufacturing industry. It encourages visitors to actively make things and contributes to an increased awareness of the processes of production and consumption.

Ferrotopia consists of a collection of distinctive buildings and workshops grouped around a central square. Ferrotopia is the culmination of a seven-year project by Atelier Van Lieshout entitled ‘New Tribal Labyrinth’. The series of artworks produced as part of this project can be seen as a reinterpretation of the factories and machines of the Industrial Revolution and a revaluation of our relationship with raw materials and equipment.

Cross-over programme
To accompany the installation, Stichting NDSM-werf has developed a programme of activities with a wide range of exhibitions, demonstrations, workshops, lectures, performances and educational activities. This programme has been put together by curator Rieke Vos (Stichting NDSM-werf) in close collaboration with various cultural organisations including Atelier Van Lieshout, Over Het IJ Festival, MU Eindhoven, EYE Filmmuseum and Partizan Publik. The programme activates the art project and continually provides it with new substantive impulses. It is divided into four phases which relate to each other as thematic chapters in the story of Ferrotopia. These phases illustrate the love of steel and the transition from traditional industry to the circular economy. The various perspectives offer a setting for a wide range of art forms and disciplines.

The center of the installation is the Domesticator, that has been subject of discussion for the international press because of the sexual reference that the work contains. Atelier Van Lieshout explains the subject of the work as follows:

“Domestikator reflects on the way humans cultivate and domesticate the world by applying their ingenuity and creativity, yet how at the same time they challenge ethical and real borders by new technologies. With the artwork, artist Joep van Lieshout wants to start a dialogue about these positive and negative forces, while playfully addressing one of the last few remaining hypocritical taboos.”

Ferrotopia is a project by Stichting NDSM-werf and has been made possible thanks to financial contributions from the City of Amsterdam, the Mondriaan Fund and the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts.
